How To Replace Lost Keys & Program A Keyless Entry Code

Keys and keyless entry systems for your vehicle are more high tech than ever, so replacing a lost key or programming a new key or code requires some know-how.

Obtaining an additional or replacement key

A Ford or Lincoln Dealership is the only place that can provide an Intelligent Access (IA) key or integrated keyhead transmitter (IKT) for Ford and Lincoln vehicles. If your original intelligent access key has been lost or stolen, or you would like to purchase an additional IA key, the best way to get a replacement is to contact your local Ford or Lincoln Dealership. You’ll need to provide them with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If your IKT has been lost or stolen and you don’t have a spare, you’ll need to have your vehicle towed to your local dealership. They will then erase the codes from your vehicle and program new coded keys for you.
How to program a new or spare integrated keyhead transmitter (IKT) yourself
The integrated keyhead transmitter functions as both a programmed ignition key that operates all the locks and starts the vehicle, as well as a remote keyless entry transmitter. Programming one will program both the engine immobilizer key code and the remote entry transmitter portion of the IKT to your vehicle. You will need two previously programmed coded keys and the new one you are programming in order to proceed.

Programming an integrated keyhead transmitter:

  1. Insert the first previously programmed coded key into the ignition.
  2. Turn the ignition from off to on. Keep the ignition on for at least three seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
  3. Turn the ignition off and remove the first coded key from the ignition.
  4. After three seconds, but within ten seconds of turning off the ignition, insert the second previously coded key into the ignition.
  5. Turn the ignition from off to on. Keep the ignition on for at least three seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
  6. Turn the ignition off and remove the second previously programmed coded key from the ignition.
  7. After three seconds, but within 20 seconds of turning the ignition off and removing the previously coded key, insert the new unprogrammed key into the ignition.
  8. Turn the ignition from off to on. Keep the ignition on for at least six seconds.
  9. Remove the newly programmed coded key from the ignition.

If the new integrated keyhead transmitter key has been successfully programmed, it will start the vehicle’s engine and will operate the Remote Keyless Entry System.
How to program a new or spare Intelligent Access (IA) key yourself
The Intelligent Access key allows you to start a vehicle using the push-button start feature (if equipped). To program an IA key yourself, you will need two previously programmed intelligent access keys inside the vehicle and your unprogrammed intelligent access key readily available. If you do not have them, or if you already have four access keys programmed to your vehicle, you will need to contact your local Ford or Lincoln Dealership to reprogram your key.

Programming an Intelligent Access key:

  1. Place the new unprogrammed Intelligent Access key in the pocket inside the center console.
  2. Press the driver or passenger power door unlock control three times.
  3. Press and release the brake pedal one time.
  4. Press the driver or passenger power door lock control three times.
  5. Press and release the brake pedal one time. The indicator on the Start/Stop button should begin to rapidly flash, indicating that the programming mode has been entered and two programmed Intelligent Access keys have been detected in the vehicle.
  6. Within one minute, press the Start/Stop button. A message will be displayed on the message center indicating that the new Intelligent Access key was programmed.
  7. Remove the Intelligent Access key from the center console pocket and press the unlock control on the newly programmed Intelligent Access keys to exit the programming mode.
  8. Verify that the remote entry functions operate by pressing lock, then unlock, and that the vehicle starts with the new Intelligent Access key.
How to program a personal entry code on your keyless entry keypad
The SecuriCode™ keyless entry keypad allows you to access the vehicle by simply entering a security code onto a keyless entry keypad located on the driver’s door. The 5-digit security code is issued at the factory and located on the owner’s wallet card in the glove compartment. You will need this code to create a personal entry code. If you’ve forgotten the code and misplaced your owner’s wallet card, you can contact your local Ford or Lincoln Dealership for assistance.

To create your own entry code:

  1. Enter the factory set code.
  2. Within five seconds, press the 1 • 2 on the keypad.
  3. Enter the personal five-digit code you’d like to use. Each number must be entered within five seconds of each other.
  4. For the memory feature, enter the sixth digit 1 • 2 to store driver 1 settings or 3 • 4 to store driver 2 settings.
  5. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that your personal entry code has been programmed to the module.
