How To Help Prevent Vehicle Theft

You’ve made a major investment in your vehicle, and unfortunately there are people who are willing to take what doesn’t belong to them.
Here are a few measures you can take to protect your vehicle from being stolen.

Remember to do your part
Even the most sophisticated security technology won’t work unless you take precautions every time you leave your vehicle. The first step is easy, but it needs to be said – never leave your keys in the ignition, even if you’re only leaving “for a second.” An opportunistic thief only needs a second, and you’d be surprised by how many drivers have found this out the hard way.

More temptations to avoid
Lock your vehicle every time you leave it, even in the driveway or garage of your home. Make sure the windows are closed all the way. And never leave personal items like packages, briefcases, coats or MP3 players in plain sight inside your vehicle. These might be tempting for would-be thieves.

Be careful while driving
Newer vehicles include autolock, a feature designed to automatically lock doors when the vehicle is in motion and all doors and the trunk or liftgate are closed. If your vehicle doesn’t have it, keep your doors locked whenever you’re in the car. If somebody appears to be in trouble and signals you to stop, stay inside your vehicle and use your cell phone to contact emergency services. If you don’t have a cell phone, continue driving to the nearest service station or public area and call for help.

Common sense works best
Always park in well-lit areas, and try to avoid parking behind large trucks, dumpsters or other vision-obstructing objects that potential thieves can hide behind. Make a spare copy of your vehicle registration to leave at home, and carry your original copy with you – not in the glove compartment. And if you’re still feeling uncertain about security, ask your local Ford or Lincoln Dealership about optional alarm systems and other security devices.
