How To Change Windshield Wiper Blades

While your Ford or Lincoln dealership is always the best place for maintaining your vehicle, it never hurts to know how to do a few things on your own.
You should make a regular habit of cleaning dirt, grit and other residue from your wiper blades using windshield washer fluid or a mild detergent diluted in warm water followed by a rinse with warm water (other solvents can damage the blades).
When to inspect your wiper blades

  • At least once every six months
  • Every time you refill your windshield wiper fluid reservoir
  • As soon as possible if they fail to clear your windshield completely or leave streaks
  • Immediately if you notice any cracks, ripped or worn rubber, visibly broken blade mechanisms or generally loose blades

Replacing your wiper blades

  1. Turn the vehicle ignition on (without starting the car) and turn on the wiper blades
  2. Turn the ignition off when the blades are vertical, so that all the necessary parts will be accessible
  3. Carefully pull the wiper arm away from the windshield and lock into the service position
  4. Turn the blade at an angle from the wiper arm
  5. Push the lock pin to release the wiper blade and pull it toward the windshield to remove it from the arm
  6. Attach the new wiper blade to the wiper arm and press it into place until you hear a click
